Georgia to Introduce European System for River Basins Management

The Government of Georgia has arranged public discussions over the Alazani-Iori River Basins Management as part of the EU Water Initiative, Eastern Partnership Countries (EUWI+ 4 EaP).

As noted by Deputy Agriculture Minister Nino Tandilashvili, the Ministry provides an active job for the effective reformation of the water resources system.

“With the EU support, we are working on the introduction of basin management principles and elaborating the basins management plan. Besides the central government officials, local self-governments have also actively engaged in the Alazani-Iori basin management plan in order to identify water supply problems and prepare due recommendations for improving access to water resources for both local residents and various sectors”, Tandilashvili noted.

The project calls for preparing and implementing the river basis management plans based on EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) principles and for involving Georgian citizens in the development process. The project also calls for improving legal and regulatory systems in Eastern Partnership countries in compliance with EU legislation and international obligations.

The public discussion was held in Tsinandali. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Agriculture Ministry, REC Caucasus, international experts and domestic interested bodies.
