27 Years Since Fall of Sukhumi

The Sukhumi massacre took place on September 27, 1993, during and after the fall of Sukhumi into separatist hands in the course of the War in Abkhazia.

It was perpetrated against Georgian civilians of Sukhumi, mainly by militia forces of Abkhaz separatists, their North Caucasian and Russian allies.

September 27 is associated in Georgia with the loss of control over Abkhazia and the ethnic cleansing of Georgians. More than 12,000 people died during the armed conflict and around 300,000 remain displaced.

On the 27th year anniversary after the fall of Sukhumi, Shalva Dadiani Drama Theater of Zugdidi presented a play "Invasion", which was held near the occupation line, in the Rukhi Fortress.

"Invasion" tells the story of a woman, who was born in the seaside town of Sukhumi and continues to live in exile in Batumi. It is the story of struggling for self-preservation after the war.

The author of the play is Kita Tskhomaria, director is Lasha Sherozia. The role of a woman was played by the actress of Batumi Drama Theater, Marina Burduli.

As Lasha Sherozia, the artistic director of the Shalva Dadiani Drama Theater in Zugdidi declared, the theater honors the heroes who died in the war in Abkhazia with this play.
