The Producer of Expensive Saffron Spice Increases Plantation Area
The Georgian producer of the most valuable and expensive spice saffron has increased the plantation areas.
A farmer living in Gori municipality used to harvest saffron on an area of 1,500 square meters, and after the expansion, he will grow the flower on 7,000 square meters.
After moving to a new scale of production, the farmer expects a new harvest in early October. The estimated volume of products will be from 1 to 2 kilograms.
"Last year we harvested 400 grams, which is not sufficient. The reason is that I transplanted the bulbs over a wider area, which was certain stress for the plant. Now, we will harvest the next crop in late September or early October. The estimated volume will amount to 1 to 2 kilograms.", noted the farmer Merab Inasaridze.
He also plans to sell saffron crocus, in particular, 500,000 bulbs by the end of the summer. As for the markets, the spice will be sold both in the local market and abroad.
