Revamped Goods Stand Turned Boutique Hotel Wins Prestigious A'Design Award

Daduna Shatashvili, a renowned architect, has transformed a dilapidated goods stand into a celebrated boutique hotel in Abastumani, earning the prestigious A'Design Award. This project, executed by architectural firm Artitex, has captured international attention, with over 200 publications in America and Europe discussing the innovative design.

The family hotel in Abastumani is an exmaple of how to blend traditional elements with modern innovations while preserving the original structure's character. The project started with an old, partially ruined building that had previously housed a goods stand. Captivated by the beauty of the ruins, the designer was inspired to maintain much of the original structure.

"We retained the charm of the ruins, transforming them into a glazed structure that features a modern black metal roof and traditional Georgian balconies and tiling. The design harmoniously integrates various styles into a cohesive, innovative project," Shatashvili explains.

The initial sketch, which the designer completed just an hour before the client's visit, laid the groundwork for what the hotel looks like today. This sketch preserved through to the final design, impressing the client and leading to high-quality renderings that stayed true to the original vision.

The A'Design Award recognizes the Abastumani family hotel for its excellence in design, functionality, and innovation, making it a deserving recipient of the Iron A'Design Award.

The A'Design Award is a globally recognized accolade in the architectural design community, celebrating outstanding design that offers original solutions to contemporary challenges. This year, out of over 200,000 entries, only about 300 projects received this honor, including Shatashvili’s family hotel project in Abastuman. Evaluated by a panel of 278 jury members, this award underlines Shatashvili’s significant impact on the architecture industry and promotes the global dissemination of the winning designs.
