Pandemic and Cement Producing in Georgia

Strict Restrictions - the coercive action in the course of Coronavirus pandemic reduces economical activities to its minimum. The main part of businesses has stopped, the rest of them continue to work with low capacities.

The decision made by Georgia's government, which managed to not stop large infrastructural projects, gave opportunity to some companies to continue working in this crisis.

The company Lafarge/GCC produces cement, which is then used for infrastructural projects.

One of the founders of Lafarge/GCC, Merab Chikhradze noted, that this type of enterprise needs production cycle stabilized, even with the reduced capacities.

"Unlike many businesses, producing cement and concrete is not paused, we continue to operate. Our products are needed for large infrastructural projects, which are significant to continue implementing due to nationwide quarantine. Although, economical index of the business is significantly changed since the main raw material value is linked to the national currency. Unfortunately, because of Lari depreciation, we are also affected as the rest of the businesses. Regardless of this fact, we acknowledge our social responsibility towards Georgia's economic stabilization and since our business is in the front line, we support the building sector with all of our efforts.", noted Merab Chikhradze.

One of the founders of Lafarge/GCC also stated, that their sales are dropped by 30%, which is not a small amount for such a business.

"Because of coronavirus pandemic, large and medium-sized private projects are temporarily stopped. These types of projects are connected with their sales portfolio and bank credits. The retail sector is also significantly reduced.", added Merab Chikhradze.
