Guria Fish Farming Plans to Open First Fish Laboratory in Georgia

A fish laboratory may be launched in Georgia. As the founder of "Guria Fish Farming" Giorgi Chkhaidze said, the cost of the project will be around 200,000 euros.

According to his statement, negotiations with the British side are currently in progress on the provision of technical assistance, including technical equipment for the laboratory and staff training.

According to Chkhaidze, there is no such laboratory in Georgia today. In the initial stage, the disease in the fish product will be determined, the next stage will be the issuance of a certificate recognized in the European Union.

We adopted Norwegian law, thus what is required of businesses there in terms of environmental protection cannot be required here. In Georgia, there are no ichthyologists. Even the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture lacks a specialist who could create a methodology focused on environmental impact. This means that the legislation currently hinders business, preventing it from growing physically.

Today, it is written in the law that the company is obliged to inform the Ministry in case of detection of diseases in the produced fish, and at this time there is no laboratory in Georgia that can detect the disease in fish," Chkhaidze says.
