Georgian Chess Legend Nona Gaprindashvili will have Her Laswuit Agains Netflix Today

The first court hearing of Nona Gaprindashvili's claim against "Netflix" will take place at the United States District Court for the Central District of California on January 24th at 14:00 local time, according to law firm BLB (at 02:00, 25th January at Georgia Standard Time). The matter will be adjudicated by the Honorable Virginia A. Phillips, the Judge.

The fifth women's world chess champion is seeking more than USD 5 million in damages for a "devastating falsehood, undermining and humiliating her accomplishments before an audience of many millions," according to the lawsuit.

The case concerns a statement from the final episode of the critically acclaimed series, which won two Golden Globes earlier this year.

While the main protagonist is playing a tournament in Moscow, a commentator says: "The only unusual thing about her, really, is her sex, and even that’s not unique in Russia”. There's Nona Gaprindashvili, but she’s the female world champion and has never faced men.

Netflix refused to delete the disputed reference from the series in September, telling Gaprindashvili's representatives that the business would not apologize for the description's choice.

A spokesperson for Netflix was quoted saying the company had "only the utmost respect for Ms. Gaprindashvili and her illustrious career, but we believe this claim has no merit and will vigorously defend the case."
