Chkhaveri Grape Culture Restored Supported by TBC

Chkhaveri – is a famous indigenous grapevine variety of Guria, known since ancient times as a provider of high-quality wine. Chkhaveri is mostly planted near the Black Sea coast in Adjara and especially in Guria, but also in Imereti. In recent years, Georgia started to restore endangered Chkhaveri grape culture.

Revaz Antadze is one of those who decided to restore the tradition of cultivating Chkhaveri on his ancestral land in Chokhatauri. With the support of TBC, he planted 700 Chkhaveri grape seed on 3500 square meters of land.

"Chkhaveri is a special grape that requires special care. In this place my ancestors used to have Chkhaveri. I decided to increase the vineyards of Chkhaveri to 1 ha. Apart from this, I also plan to cultivate other rare varieties in the region, such as Jani and Skhilatobani.", noted Revaz Antadze.

The farmer waits for the first harvest in three years. At the first stage, Revaz Antadze plans to produce 5 to 10 tons of wine. The wine made from Chkhaveri is of special quality. It is characterized by light pink color, is gentle and harmonious, and is distinguished by the balance of alcohol and acidity. This variety of wine is used to make sparkling wine. It is stored in a pitcher for 2 years before bottling.
