Chernobyl Sees 30% Increase in Tourism After HBO Series

 

The real Chernobyl is seeing a 30% increase in visitors following HBO's popular series about the 1986 nuclear disaster.

Tourist operators are forecasting the number of tourists visiting the site may double this year up to 150,000 Located near the city of Pripyat, around 110 kilometers north of Kiev, Chernobyl is one of the most polluted places in the world and can only be visited with a licensed guide.

Various tour companies offer guided trips into the "exclusion zone," which covers an area of more than 4,000 square kilometers around the nuclear power plant, USAtoday reports.
