Trade Turnover Between Georgia and Japan is $ 188 Million - Everything we Import and Export

The Minister of Economy Natia Turnava expressed interest in starting negotiations on a free trade agreement between Georgia and Japan during an online meeting with Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister Taro Honda a few days ago. According to the Ministry of Economy, the sides discussed the priority areas of bilateral relations.

"The establishment of a free regime between Georgia and Japan will create new opportunities for strengthening and deepening trade and economic relations, which will further encourage business representatives," the agency said in a press release.

According to official statistics, in the first 10 months of this year, trade between Georgia and Japan was 18.1% higher than the same period last year, and before the pandemic, January-November 2019 (November 2019) is 22.1% lower. Trade turnover in this period this year amounted to 188 million dollars (2020 - 159.2 million dollars; 2019 - 241.5 million dollars). The volume of exports from Georgia is minimal and amounts to 17.9 million dollars.

It should be noted that exports over the last 4 years, despite the pandemic, are characterized by an upward trend, respectively, compared to the previous year, Georgia earned 22.3% more than last year, 57.8% more than in 2019 (2020 10 months - 14.6 million Dollars; 2019 - 11.3 million dollars; 2018 - 10.3 million dollars).

As for the goods we sell in Japan, the top 10 largest products exported are as follows:

1. Waste and scrap of precious metals or metals clad in precious metals - $ 11.1 million;
2. Aluminum crude - $ 2.9 million;
3. Cars - $ 1.6 million;
4. Natural grape wines - 820.9 thousand dollars;
5. Rubber pneumatic springs and tires - 578 thousand dollars;
6. Fruit and vegetable juices - 308 thousand dollars;
7. Waste and scrap of copper - 156.8 thousand dollars;
8. Fresh fruits - 135.1 thousand dollars;
9. Ferroalloys - 128.6 thousand dollars;
10. Shoes with rubber, polymer material, leather sole and leather upper - 45.5 thousand dollars.

Exports are minimal in the trade turnover between the countries in 10 months, while imports are maximum, respectively, this year, imports increased by 17.6% compared to last year ($ 144.6 million) and amounted to $ 170.1 million. This number has decreased by 26% compared to 2019 (2019 - $ 230.1 million). As for what Georgia buys in Japan, the main import product in 10 months was cars. The top 10 major imported goods include:

1. Cars - 152 million dollars;
2. Rubber pneumatic springs and tires, new - $ 3.6 million;
3. Tools and equipment for use in medicine or veterinary medicine - $ 2.1 million;
