Rehabilitation of Enguri HPP to Start January 15-20 - Georgia's Largest HPP Stops
Rehabilitation of Enguri HPP will start from January 15-20.
Therefore, the HPP will be completely shut down from that period. As Levan Mebonia, the director of Enguri HPP, told BusinessPressNews, the rehabilitation will last 95-100 days, and the deadline for resumption of operation is May 10.
For reference, Enguri HPP is the largest producer of electricity in Georgia and its output is about 30% of the total generation. In particular, in 2019, the country generated a total of 11,856.8 million kWh of electricity, where the share of Enguri HPP was 28.1%, ie last year the HPP generated 3341.3 million kWh of electricity. It should be noted that de facto Abkhazia is supplied from Enguri HPP, about 40% of the electricity generated by the HPP is supplied to the occupied territory.
Recall that the rehabilitation of the Enguri HPP tunnel has been postponed three times. Initially, the works were to start in 2018, then in 2019, and finally in March 2020. However it was delayed three times for various reasons.
