One Year of Producing Electricity at the Shuakhevi HPP

The Shuakhevi Hydropower Plant (HPP), the largest energy project in the history of independent Georgia, began operating in the spring of 2020 and has been safely generating electricity for more than a year without any technical challenges.

The Shuakhevi HPP is especially important during periods when Georgia experiences energy deficits. As a daily regulation hydropower plant, it plays an important role in supplying the country with electricity during peak demand. With the electricity it generates, the Shuakhevi HPP is helping to boost domestic power production and, at the same time, decrease Georgia’s dependence on imported energy.

The Shuakhevi HPP was built by Adjaristsqali Georgia LLC in the Khulo and Shuakhevi municipalities of mountainous Adjara. During the construction phase, Adjaristsqali Georgia was the largest employer in Adjara, creating more than one thousand jobs for residents. The project also implemented hundreds of social projects with a total cost of GEL 8 million.

As previously announced by the project’s Norwegian and Indian investors, young Georgian engineers are now managing the hydropower plant during its operation phase, and the electricity produced by the Shuakhevi HPP is being supplied to Georgian residents every day.

Meanwhile, Adjaristsqali Georgia continues to coordinate with local residents to plan and implement social projects throughout the operation phase.

The Shuakhevi HPP is a cascade of power plants with a capacity of 187 MW and an investment value of over USD 510 million.
