Industries and Sectors Affected by Pandemic in Georgia

PMCG discussed possible scenatios of Covid-19 impact on Georgian economy in its research. Document also mentions sectors that were affected the most.

The five most negatively affected sectors are:

  • Art, fun and leisure;
  • Placement and food supply;
  • Transport and storage;
  • Wholesale and retail trade;
  • Other types of services.

The expected impact on the following sectors is slightly negative or positive:

  • Health and social services;
  • Professional, scientific and technical activities;
  • State governance;
  • Mining industry.

Given the negative impact on certain sectors of the economy, it is almost inevitable that employment in these sectors will also decline. According to PMCG's forecast, in case of the optimistic scenario, the total number of employees in Georgia will decrease by 6.3%, according to the less pessimistic scenario - by 9.8%, and in the case of a very pessimistic scenario - by 14.4%.

"It is expected that the negative impact of the pandemic will change the structure of employment in Georgia and will make the group of self-employed people who are 44% of the labor force more vulnerable in 2019," the study said.
