Georgia’s Electricity Consumption Grows by 5%
Georgia’s electricity consumption has increased by 5.1%, the statistics published by the Electricity System Commercial Operator (ESCO) reads.
Under the document, in January-April 2021, the total electricity supply to the Georgian economy constituted 4.5 billion kw/h, up 220 million kw/h year on year. As for the domestic generation, it has declined by 19% to 2.98 billion kw/h after Enguri HPP rehabilitation started in January 2021. As reported, the facility resumed operation in late April 2021, after a 3-month break.
Amid declining domestic generation, the electricity imports increased by 117% to 1.69 billion kw/h, that is, 37.5% of the consumed electricity, while the majority of imports went to Russia-invaded Abkhazia – 924 million kw/h from Russian Federation. Georgia’s electricity imports in January-April due to countries are as follows: Russia – 1.037 billion kw/h Azerbaijan - 499 million kw/h Turkey – 161.2 million kw/h Consumers buy electricity from distribution companies.
According to the statistics, in January-April TELASI subscribers consumed 930 million kw/h, while Energo-Pro Georgia subscribers consumred1.49 billion kw/h. There are approximately 20 major companies that buy electricity without electricity distribution companies. Direct consumers have purchased 931 million kw/h in January-April 2021, up 6.5% year on year.
