With the Support of RMG, a Virtual Modeling and Simulation Laboratory Opens at GTU

With RMG’s support, a high-tech virtual modeling and simulation laboratory has been opened at the Faculty of Mining and Geology of the Georgian Technical University (GTU).

The newly created facility enables students to conduct computer simulations of mining processes using cutting-edge technology. Through on-site virtual reality (VR) technology, they can explore mining quarries and various geological sites across Georgia without even leaving the laboratory.

The ceremonial ribbon was symbolically cut by RMG’s General Director, Joni Shubitidze, and the GTU Rector, Academician Davit Gurgenidze. They toured the facility, introduced with the test projects, and reviewed the state-of-the-art equipment provided for the laboratory. Thanks to the VR Headset acquired through the project, visitors can virtually explore the historic mining quarry of RMG, as well as the unique training mine located on the GTU’s campus.

“This partnership between RMG and GTU has already demonstrated significant progress and positive outcomes. It is a mutually beneficial collaboration — our industry gains from the students, and the university benefits from our efforts as well. We are proud that up until now, more than 200 GTU graduates are employed at RMG. To achieve shared goals, this cooperation must continue in a sustainable manner, ensuring long-term success,” stated Joni Shubitidze, General Director of RMG.

During the ceremony, the partners reflected on their joint projects within 2021-2024, and signed on an updated four-year action plan. This plan covers continued support for students and young scientists, as well as RMG’s involvement in upgrading other training laboratories and improving the faculty’s overall infrastructure.

“The Faculty of Mining and Geology, with its 103-year history, plays a crucial role in the development of the country’s industrial sector. It is encouraging to see growing interest in the field, and together with our partners, we are committed to improving the educational process. I would like to extend my special thanks to RMG for their support in opening this new high-tech laboratory. I also want to acknowledge our dedicated scientists, deanery, and students, and wish them success. Today, we had the opportunity to visit the new laboratory and to get acquainted with the work of young mining students, who will continue the legacy of great scientists,” – GTU’s Rector Davit Gurgenidze stated.

Starting from current academic year, students will be able to learn the latest industry-specific software in two high-tech laboratories established by RMG at the Faculty of Mining and Geology. These labs will also provide software support for researches, conducted by either master's or doctoral students. The virtual modeling and simulation laboratory will facilitate computer simulations of mining processes using VR technologies, enabling students to virtually explore operational mining sites and geological production areas across Georgia.
