Inauguration of Georgian E-Cars Production Suspended – “Waiting for Better Epidemiological Situation”

Georgia was expected to introduce its first electric car in August 2020, however, the date has been postponed for an indefinite time amid the pandemic, Kakha Guledani, head of the I-Group board of directors told Business Press News.

“The global pandemic that broke out in China in December 2019, naturally, has suspended our plans too. Because of the logistics problems, we could not timely convey the production line and technologies that we purchased in autumn 2019. Our partner, the Chinese giant in the automobile industry, partly resumed operation only in the second half of February and nobody knows when the plant will resume full-scale operation. We received a full set of production lines and technologies only in July.

Another important problem is related to training our staff in China. We are waiting for a team of engineers from China who were to manage the enterprise and install the production lines. We also planned to refer a team of Georgian specialists for training in China. These plans were also suspended in December 2019.

We are waiting for a better epidemiological situation. We hope that the current situation will get improved in the near future and we will resume the process. However, we cannot specify the dates now. We are doing our best and taking all efforts to launch the pledged production in Georgia and introduce a Georgian e-car in the near future”, Kakha Guledani noted.

As reported, the plant plans to produce 40,000 e-cars a year and one-third part of these automobiles will be sold on the domestic market.
