Georgian Restaurants Record 8.7% Average Rise in Prices

In December 2019, prices at Georgian public food outlets rose by 8.7% on average, as reported by Geostat, the national statistics service of Georgia, based on several subcategories of prices at restaurants and cafes:

• Dinner at a restaurants – 11.19% annual upturn;

• Coffee at a café – up 7.29% year on year;

• Khachapuri at a café – up 9.99% year on year;

• Beer in bar – up 2.81% year on year;

• Khinkali at a restaurant – up 13.11% year on year;

Higher food prices are said to have raised prices at restaurants and cafes. In February 2020, price of main food products rose by 12.7%. In details:

Food and soft drinks: prices in the group rose by 12.7% and its contribution to the annual inflation made up 3.95%. Pries rose in the following subgroups: fruit and grapes (+25.1%), milk, cheese and eggs (+19.2%), meat and meat products (+15.1%), sugar, and confectioneries (+11.2%), vegetables and garden plants (+11.1%), fish products (+10.3%), mineral and spring waters, soft drinks and natural juices (+8.7%), oil and fat (+7.4%), bread and pastry (+5.6%), coffee, tea and cocoa (+5%). Consequently, growing prices of ingredients have also made restaurant services more expensive.

The annual inflation rate in February 2020 made up 6.4%.
