Know Your UN Millennium Goals in 2015

Everyone on the political scene is talking about the UN Millennium Goals. What are these exactly? Well, apparently, back in 200o the UN set some global goals for achieving before 2015. These are aptly called Millennium Goals and their deadline is coming up in December of this year.

Between 25-27 September 160 world leaders, among them Georgia’s Government delegation, have gathered in New York to attend the UN Sustainability Summit, which marked UN’s 70th General Assembly. Millennium Goals were specifically addressed at the Assembly.

Here is the list of the Goals that the UN and the global community set as priority back in 2000:

Goal 1: Eradicate Extreme Hunger and Poverty

Goal 2: Achieve Universal Primary Education

Goal 3: Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women

Goal 4: Reduce Child Mortality

Goal 5: Improve Maternal Health

Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases

Goal 7: Ensure Environmental Sustainability

Goal 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development

World leaders discussed how far humanity has gone in the past 15 years in achieving these complex and, one can say, idealistic goals.

In his turn, the Georgian PM highlighted the country’s Hepatitis C eradiation program at the 70th Assembly; Georgia is set to become the global “test-bed” for Hepatitis C elimination. Combating diseases represents the aim of UN’s Millennium Goal 6.
