Azerbaijan to Imprison for Unlawful Import of GMOs

Azerbaijan has made the amendments to the amendments to the Code of Administrative Offences and the Criminal Code.

During the discussion of the amendments, the head of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Policy & Government Structure, Ali Huseynov, has stated that the amendments provide for the application of penalties for illegal importation, sale and use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). According to the amendments, the deliberate illegal import, sale and use of GMOs will be fined AZN 3,000-5,000. Besides, the offender will be possibly sentenced to two years of prison. Deliberate use of GMOs in food will be punished by a fine of AZN 4,000-6,000 or 3 years of prison and import, sale and use of GMOs in larger sizes by a fine of AZN 7,000-9,000 or up to 5 years of prison. The amendments also envisage 3-7 years of prison for repeated violation of the above-mentioned articles.
