What Happened at Apakidze Street, Tbilisi (Photo Gallery)

A Soviet Era building collapsed at Apakidze 13 in Tbilisi today. We reported earlier that a building located behind the Sports Palace collapsed in the Saburtalo district. The building was used by the Institute of Mathematics prior to being sold to a private investor. The building was being refurbished at the moment of today’s collapse, in which at least four people have died.
Refurbishing of the building was undertaken by the private company “Tiflis Business Center.” Tbilisi mayor representatives have stated to the press that the company had obtained the license required to conduct the construction works.
Tbilisi Vice Mayor Dimitri Kumsiashvili has commented that an investigation is underway and those at fault for the tragedy will pay their dues in vis-a-vis the law.
