Rio wasn’t a big disaster like many had predicted. But it came packed with thrills and controversies that got people talking.

The games in Rio shattered several records and introduced a new generation of Olympic stars. 

Georgia Finishes Rio Olympics with 7 Medals

Georgia has finished 38th in the medal table at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Georgia won two gold, one silver, and four bronze medals in weightlifting, judo and wrestling.

Lasha Talakhadze won the gold medal in men’s over 105kg weightlifting with a world record and Irakli Turmanidze won the bronze in the same weight category – it was the first time in Olympic history that two athletes from Georgia had shared the same podium.

Vladimer Khinchegashvili won gold in the men’s freestyle 57kg he defeated Japan’s Rei Higuchi. The edge was held by Higuchi, 3-2, late in the second period, but Higuchi was then put on the shot clock with 1:13 left in the bout. Higuchi failed to score, giving a point to Khinchegashvili and putting the Georgian ahead based on tiebreaking criteria.

Saddest Moment for Georgia…

Georgian judoka Varlam Liparteliani won a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro on August 10. Liparteliani defeated Gwak-Dong Han from South Korea in the semi-final, but in the final round was defeated by Japan’s Mashu Baker.

Even though a silver medal is a great achievement, the athlete is not completely happy with the result.

Georgia’s first medal at Rio Olympic Games

Georgian judoka Lasha Shavdatuashvili won bronze, and the country’s first medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Winning in 30 Seconds 

Geno Petriashvili won bronze in men’s freestyle 125 kg wrestling in the Rio Olympics on Saturday. In the final, Petriashvili won against Tervel Dlagnev from the United States. The score was 10-0 in the first period as Petriashvili defeated the competitor in just 30 seconds.

Another Bronze…

Georgia’s Shmagi Bolkvadze took bronze in the Rio Olympics in the Men’s Greco-Roman 66 kg wrestling.

First rower from Georgia

Georgian rower Zaza Nadiradze ranked 5th at Rio Olympiad, He has gained first place in the semi-final as covered 200 meters in 40.146 seconds. He is one of the best ones that competed in the semi-final.

Ranked 14th, Georgian gymnast Salome Pazhava received attention competing at Rio Olympics accompanied by Georgian national folk music, Rachuli.

First fencer from Georgia

Georgian fencer Sandro Bazadze was the first to qualify for Rio Olympics, he was defeated by olympic champion with the minimal point difference.

Mother and son team up for a games first

The first mother and son competed at the same olumpic games, three time medalist Nino Salukvadze and her son Tsotne Machavariani represented Georgia in the pistol events at rio 2016.
