Yesterday, Georgian tennis player Nikoloz Basilashvili fell to Rafael Nadal in the Spaniard’s pursuit of a fourth United States Open championship.
Nadal won the match, 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-4, to advance to a quarterfinal against No. 9 Dominic Thiem, but Basilashvili, with his tenacity and dynamism, won the respect of many fans in Ashe Stadium, as well as the admiration of many of his fellow Georgians back home.
This was Basilashvili’s first time reaching the fourth round of a major tournament, and he is coming off a summer in which he reached a career-high ranking of 35th (he is now No. 37).
“Everybody was watching,” Basilashvili said. “A lot of people were supporting me, so it feels really good.”
