Nino Chkhobadze: Nenskra Hydro Construction didn’t Cause Disaster in Svaneti

According to Nino Chkhobadze, an environmental expert and chairman of “Georgia’s Greens – Friend of Earth”, Disaster happened in Svaneti wasn’t caused by Nenskra Hydro construction.

According to her, any construction is some kind of risk and has impact on the environment. However construction of Nenskra Hydro wasn’t in relevant phase to cause flooding.

The company was still given a strict recommendation, that their geology is not fully studied.

”There are quite serious landslide processes happened up in the valley. A whole new risk assessment needs to be done.

We have to find out if it’s worth to build hydro power plant and be under risk, or not to build and try something else, less expensive.

The ark was being built there and we were lucky it was not done yet, and water wasn’t accumulated. It would cause demolishing a dam, or Zhinvali story would be replayed and  there would be more serious flooding.

No one can predict what would be better, but the fact is Nenskra was not a cause, while it still needs to recount and change its project design,”-Chkhobadze said.

According to the National Environmental Agency, on July 5 night, river Nenskra swelled up because of rain that caused development of landslide processes.

The village of Chuberi and several other settlements are isolated. Due to the departure of the riverbed, the area was flooded. The fallen landslide demolished connecting bridges and two houses.
