For the first time in eight years, a Georgian athlete has been crowned world wrestling champion.
Georgia’s Vladimer Khinchegashvili (57kg) defeated five opponents to become the World Wrestling Champion 2015 in Las Vegas, USA.
Khinchegashvili met an Iranian wrestler in the final; both athletes fought hard but the Georgian managed to defeat his opponent in the last second of the match.
Along with becoming world champion, the Georgian also gained the right to compete at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Meanwhile at the Las Vegas competition, Georgia won three bronze medals. The medalists were Geno Petriashvili (125kg), Sandro Amainashvili (86kg) and Lasha Gobadze (80kg). All three athletes also qualified for next year’s Olympic Games.
The last time when a Georgian athlete became world wrestling champion was in 2007.
