Defense Minister Plans to Fully Abolish Conscription starting 2017

Defense Minister of Georgia Tinatin Khidasheli plans to entirely abolish the conscription system in the Georgian armed forces.

“The Defense Ministry of Georgia has already taken this decision and legislative support is required. We will remove the conscription system starting 2017. Naturally, this does not signify the process will be over in 2017. Our mission is to start establishing the voluntary military service system in 2017 and this system works in many NATO member countries.

This is far efficient system. In any case, I, as the Defense Minister, have taken this decision. However, if other Minister replaces me, naturally, this decision may be revised”, Tinatin Khidasheli told the Moambe TV program.
