Sakstat to Launch International Method to Calculate Unemployment Rate

Sakstat uses an international methodology while calculating the number of unemployed in the country, but it might be revised.

According to statistics expert Soso Archvadze, radical changes can’t be  carried out since the methodology was approved by the International Labor Organization, but certain adjustments can be made.

“According to the ILO, a citizen is considered employed who during the week prior to the survey, received financial remuneration for any work. But in Georgia this practice works poorly, since there are a very large number of self-employed people in the country. In Europe, their number is several times smaller, and does not exceed 15%, whereas in Georgia it reaches 75%,” he says.

In Soso Archvadze’s words, the fact of receiving financial remuneration does not mean anything either, since it can be so miserable that it can’t become a reason to consider a person employed.

“The international methodology for calculating unemployment gives a theoretically correct result, but only theoretically – it does not reflect the real state of employment in the country,” Soso Archvadze notes.
