Overview of Enforcement Challenges of Technical Regulation on Milk and Fairy Products in Georgia

On 17 December, the Georgian Farmers’ Association together with its partner organization organized a public-private dialogue and presented the first policy brief on enforcement challenges of the technical regulation on milk and dairy products in the country.

The presentation was followed by a discussion to feature the main aspects of technical regulation on milk and dairy products. It highlighted progress as well as challenges associated with the regulation. One of the main recommendations of the policy brief on the process of enforcement is to clearly distinguish the roles of the public and private sector and develop a sophisticated approach to solve the problems in the dairy industry.

The event was organized in the framework of the EU-funded project “Food and Agriculture SME Support Initiative” (FASSI).

“Given Georgia’s reputation and its unique Sulguni and Matsoni products, we very much welcome the choice made for the first policy brief under the EU-funded project,” said Dominik Pappenheim, Programme Officer at the EU Delegation to Georgia. “We believe that there are significant market opportunities and hope that today’s discussion will contribute to achieving higher productivity levels and better food safety in these sectors.”

The EU project continues to support public and private dialogue on different issues relevant for Business Support Organisations (BSOs) and farmers.
