Industrial coal Reserves Amounts to 372 Million tons in Georgia

Total volume of industrial reserves (A, B and C1 categories) amounts to 372 million tons in Georgia, – “Strategy of Georgian Energy Sector”, worked out by Energy ministry reports.

Coal deposits are basically placed in three regions of Georgia: Tkibul-Shaori, Tkvarcheli and Akhaltsikhe. Coal reserves are two types: coal and brown coal (lignite). It should be noted, that Tkibul-Shaori deposit belongs to big deposits, which industrial reserves equal to 280 million t. Imported coal is used in order to enrich its calorie. As for Tkvarcheli deposit, its reserves are not so big – over 21 million t.

Akhaltsikhe brown coal deposit has more important industrial reserves – about 71 million t. Today, coal is issued for industrial, as well as commercial and household purposes in Georgia.

In the coal mining business GIG is represented by Saknakhshiri LLC. The company is the nation’s only coal producer and sole owner of economically important Georgian coal mining assets, which are Tkibuli-Shaori and Vale coalfields.

Under current extraction licenses, at company’s disposal are 407 million tons of coal deposits. Extraction volumes amounted to 350 thousand tons of coal in 2014.
