Good Harvest of Wheat is Expected in Kakheti Despite of Heavy Rains

The season of wheat harvesting begins in Kakheti. Harvesting of the first crop of wheat is already begun in Sighnaghi region, village Milari. Reaping will start in Dedoplistskaro in two weeks.

Farmer Zurab Tetvadze declared to GBC that grain crops have not been destroyed in the region despite the frequent rains and hail.

“It is very difficult to predict how much the amount of harvest will be, rather than the combine enters the field. However, it should be a normal volume. We will not take less than last year”, – the farmer said.

Positive prognosis is in Gardabani district. Soso Okruashvili, who has been producing wheat, maize, barley and other grains in Sartichala on the land plot of 1200 ha, expects good harvest as well, but the price does not seem him satisfactory.

“So far, wheat harvesting is not on the scale, but as said, buyers offer 40 tetri per 1 kg to the framers. This is a low price. If we envisage that fuel prices are grown due to the strengthening of the USD, as well as poison-chemicals”, – Soso Okruashvili notes.

It is noteworthy that the price of wheat increases on the international markets from the previous week. Yesterday, the US Department of Agriculture predicted deterioration of crops due to adverse climatic conditions. Consequently, the price of soft wheat rose by 2, 02 USD on the Chicago Stock Exchange and reached173.61 USD, while the price of solid wheat rose by 6, 16 USD and achieved 241.13 USD.

Due to the long heat and drought, the fate of French wheat, another big producer of the crop, is unclear. Unlike the previous year, Russia will not receive record amount of harvest, which is the main importer of grain in Georgia – the reason is unusual cold and hail. As the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation predicts, its volume will be less than 100 million tons.
