Giorgi Bakhturidze: Higher Taxes on Tobacco Products Cannot Lower Smoking Level

Growth in tobacco taxes cannot lower smoking level in the country, Giorgi Bakhturidze, head of Tobacco Control Alliance, told Palitra radio station.

“Tobacco is inflexible product. This signifies growth in tobacco product taxes cannot lower smoking level in the same volume.

We have been categorically demanding for many years and we have submitted a due initiative to the Parliament that the Parliament adopt a bill timely and quickly to protect next generations from this type of addiction”, Bakhturidze said.

We remind you that under the government decision, excise tax on tobacco products has increased by 60 Tetri on January 1, 2017. Specialists assert that after this decision the price of one pack of cigarettes  increased by at least 1-1.5 GEL and this tendency cannot lower smoking level in the country, while the government expects this level to shrink by 10%.
