Georgian Farmers to Grow Potato Cancer Resistant Breeds in Private Land Plots

Potato cancer is the heaviest potato disease and it is considered the most dangerous body in many countries worldwide. Therefore, on June 25, 2015 government of Georgia passed resolution on Potato Cancer Control Regulations.

The decision obliged the agriculture research center to submit a list of potato cancer resistant breeds to Agriculture Ministry every year.

Starting spring 2016 specialists of the Agriculture Ministry research center and the national food agency have been testing potato breeds resistant to pathogens that provoke potato cancer disease. Tests proceed in Khulo Municipality, Ajara Region.

The group has searched out and planted cancer resistant potato breeds in several villages of Ajara Region. The specialists have planted 15 breeds and only 6 ones showed persistence to cancer, including two ones are Georgian breeds – Javakheturi and Meskhuri Red. It should be noted Meskhuri Red has showed qualitative and quantitative advantages too.

The specialists noted that they will transmit cancer resistant seed material to farmers soon.
