On July 1, 2016 the Georgia-EU association agreement has come into force, under 431st article, after on May 23 the EU Board of Foreign Affairs took a decision on completion of ratification procedures.
The ratification process has lasted about 2 years and the European Parliament, the EU 28 member countries and Georgia’s legislative bodies were involved in the process.
Ratification of agreement in unprecedentedly short timeframes proves the EU strong support to Georgia’s EU aspirations.
“The First of July is a new important date in the history of Georgia-EU relations, because the Association agreement has become officially a base legal framework for high-level cooperation with the EU.
Today all provisions have come into force officially and the process of political association and economic integration that imply establishment of European political, trade-economic, social and legal standards, will proceed in irreversible full-scale format”, the Georgian Foreign Ministry statement reads.
“The association agreement between the EU and the European Atomic Energy Community and its member states, on the one hand, and Georgia, on the other hand, was signed on June 27, 2014 and was enacted on September 2, 1015 on temporary basis.
