Ex Economy Minister: Unclear Why Commercial Attaches were Selected behind Closed Doors

“It is unclear why commercial attaches were selected behind closed doors”, Vera Kobalia, the former Minster of Economy of Georgia and founder of Kobalia Consulating company, told Business Morning TV program.

Georgian society should know who represents its interest abroad, how skillful this person is and how much salary he/she receives. These details are important for successful operation of commercial attaches, Vera Kobalia said.

“This is not a recently invented position. It exists in the USA, Great Britain and other countries. Therefore, this status is acceptable for investors and commercial attaches are well-known in all other countries. However, it is important how this person knows this or that field, how well he/she speaks foreign languages and therefore, it is unclear for me why they were selected behind closed doors. It is also interesting how much salary will be paid to commercial attaches – will they spend full energy on the field, on attracting investments in case of low salaries?

When talking about Hong-Kong experience, they have allocated huge budget to commercial attaches for inviting guests to supper events, tours and drawing investments and companies to the country”, Vera Kobalia noted.
