Bernard Kouchner: Generics Need to Be Offered to Public at Affordable Prices

Board chairperson of the Global Alliance and former French foreign and health Minister Bernard Kouchner attended international health conference in Tbilisi and made few remarks regarding Generic drugs, he noted that it is inevitable to offer public generics at affordable, low prices.

When citizen feels he/she is able to buy  Generic drugs, which are produced in India, it is important them to be at low prices, however this system needs to be constantly controlled,” Bernard Kouchner said.

I remember the time when we were starting reform in my country, providing affordability on Generics was tough, because people didn’t trust new medicines, that’s why Georgia has to work hard with citizens and groups of doctors to boost trusts.

Doctor should explain to patient what are generic drugs, of course involvement of Ministry of health is important as well too.

You need to make an option between country’s budget and healthcare,” he added.

France had healthcare insurance but it took long time to create the whole system. Process was long and hard, for now we have united healthcare system but it is costly. We offer option of system which answers to general affordability inevitable and medicine progress issues.
