80% of Local Population Supports Construction of Nenskra HPP

80% of local population back a construction of Nenskra HPP, the Mestia District Governor Kapiton Zhorzholiani told the Business Morning.

Local budget revenues have considerably increased, he said.

“In 2017 the local budget received 2.2 million GEL from Nenskra HPP project and this amount is of vital importance for Svaneti”, he noted.

Rumors as if 700 hectare woodland is being annihilated in Svaneti because of the Nenskra HPP do not reflect reality. The biggest space of the project achieves 267 hectares in reality, Zhorzholiani explained.

Before 2013 local residents used to chop the mentioned volume of timber in 2 days and used them as firewood, Kapiton Zhorzholiani said.

Nenskra HPP of 280 megawatt/hour power is being constructed by Partnership Fund jointly with Korean company K-Water in Svaneti.
The HPP will launch power generation in 2019. The project implementation will be finished in 2012. Construction works are being carried out by Italian Company Salini Impreglio jointly with Georgian contractor construction company GCC. Total value of the project is 1 billion USD.
