Government Charges Georgian Manganese 416 mln GEL for Environmental Damages

Special manager is assigned at “Georgian Manganese” for 3 years, before May 9, 2020.

During this period, Mr. Nikoloz Chikovani must ensure consistent and timely performance of license conditions, as well as the company’s continuous activities.

News Agency GBC also learned that the Ministry of Environment charges “Georgian Manganese” environment damages, worth of 416.11 million GEL, which is continuously increasing, including land plot degradation – the volume of pollution is increased by of 324.3 million through 2010-2014; water pollution (2013-2014) – 30.65 million; atmospheric air pollution – 60.47 million in 2012-2015; illegal action of forest resources – 650 thousand in 2013-2016.

Representative of the Ministry also declared to the Court that despite the huge losses, deprivation of a license to the company will create a threat of termination production for an indefinite period and other economic problems. As a result, decision on appoint of a special manager has been adopted. However, the investor perceives it as an attempt to confiscate his property and plans to appeal the court.

“We have become victims of such decisions, which are not within the scope of any legislation, neither international law nor the international business community. Thousands of jobs in Georgia are at a risk, as well as the rule of law, and the international reputation of Georgia and the US supply by raw materials for steel production, which is an important issue of the US national security, “- said “Georgian American Eloise”(GAA).

Is also unacceptable for the investor to give extra rights to the special manager, as it turned out Mr. Nikoloz Chikovani’s candidatures is not an independent person, he is in close contact and has private interests with shareholders of the Georgian group that owns small share – 4% of GAA.
