Georgian Designer Wins Fashion Oscar

Demna Gvasalia has been awarded the CDFA’s (the Council of Fashion Designers of America) ‘Oscar of Fashion’ statuette in the ‘Best International Designer’ nomination, for promoting Vetements and Balenciaga brands.

It’s the first time that a designer from the post-Soviet area has been granted this most prestigious award in the U.S. fashion industry (CFDA Fashion Awards).

The awards ceremony this year took place at the Hammerstein Ballroom in the Manhattan centre, in New York City.

The Georgian designer has dedicated his Fashion Oscar to his grandma. As Gvasalia pointed out earlier in his interviews, his grandma, who had perfect taste, was the only source of inspiration for him.

Gvasalia was born in Sukhumi (Abkhazia) in 1981. He is a graduate of the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In 2009 he was employed at Maison Margiela. He took a job at Louis Vuitton fashion house in 2013.

In October 2016, Gvasalia was appointed as the creative director at Balenciaga, an iconic and ancient fashion house. He is a co-founder of the Vetements popular brand. Despite his close cooperation with Balenciaga, the Georgian designer keeps creating new collections for his own brand.
