First Georgian whiskey “Alexander” has appeared on the local spirits market. According to “Alexander Distillery” founder Alexander Kvernadze, the product was released to the market in November and is made in a wine bar “Sancho” in Tbilisi and CHACHA TIME bar in Batumi.
According to him, whiskey is made from barley and malt corn which fermentation and distillation takes place in a pitcher (qvevri) , for refinement the French-American 100- liter oak barrels are used and afterwards the product is aged for 3 years.
Export is not a priority for the company at this stage as the product is exclusive and is made in small quantities,at the same time the company is waiting for the user’s reaction. In Kvernadze’s words, so far Georgian whiskey has not been produced and the company is trying to occupy its niche in this category that is a rather difficult task.
